Back in the medieval times, well over 500 years ago, people thought crimes were committed by people who were possessed by demons. Nowadays, we know much more about the human psyche and the real reasons why people commit crimes. But what type of person commits crimes? It might sound like a simple question, most likely relating to the person's genetics or traumatic experiences, however, it is a very complicated question that still has no definitive answer. In my opinion, people commit crimes for several reasons, those reasons being home life as well as opportunity. Although genetics might have a slight influence on which people commit crimes, I believe it is mostly home life that differentiates criminals from civilians. Human beings learn the most about how to act in society from their parents, so the environment in which someone is raised makes a large difference in their morals and personal beliefs. Two identical twins with the exact same DNA raised in different households would behave very differently and have entirely different morals. I also believe that people don’t have the motive to commit crime if the opportunity is not there. Unless there is an opportunity to commit a crime and get away with it, the average criminal would not attempt such a crime. Therefore, people would not commit crime if the opportunity is not presented.
